My beautiful monroe
Well I have wanted the Monroe piercing for awhile but did not know if I wanted two facial piercings. (I already have my nose pierced.) I am on my way to becoming a lawyer and I know that having piercings is not going to look professional in that field. I started doing some more research on line and looked at images and it just looked so elegant. This was something that I definitely would go for but since I had my nose I did not want to give people the wrong impression about me. Singing is also very important to me and my teacher had forbidden me to get a tongue piercing so I figured the Monroe was the next best thing. This was also more feminine and something suited towards my taste. I also know that there are a lot of jobs that do not let you have facial piercings. Then as I started thing about it more, I figured what the hell, I might as well get it done now, and than regret never doing it.
I called up my friend Jill and asked her when she would be willing to drive me to get my Monroe piercing. (I'm currently at college where freshmen are not allowed to have cars.) She told me she would be able to pick me up in about two hours! I also asked which piercing studio we should go to. Jill has many piercings including her navel, tongue, nose, lip, tragus, and several more in her ear. She recommended going to Starlight tattoo. I looked up Starlight Tattoo and a piercer named Dominick. It said he had been piercing since 1995 which made me feel very secure. I also went to other websites that mentioned how clean a studio should be, how the needles and clamps should be new, and that you want a piercer with a good length of time experience. The next day Jill came and picked me up and brought me to Starlight, where she had gotten her lip pierced a month before. I noticed that her lip had healed very nicely so I had a good feeling about this place.
We arrived at the studio which was very tidy and clean. I filed out all the information and showed them my license. I paid about $72. Then I went with downstairs to the piercing studio. I had brought my roommate for support as well. Dominick was very nice and was good at calming me down. He made small conversation and told a few jokes which made me feel better. Then he cleaned the seat and told me to gargle with mouthwash for a minute. Then I was able to pick out the type of stud, and was delighted to see I was able to get a diamond stud, instead of the silver ball. They also had cute little pink ones piercing rings. Then he had me sit down so that he could measure my lip. This of course made my roommate start laughing so I had to pause and regain composure. After my nervous laughing fit, Dominick made a mark and when I looked in the mirror I felt that the placement was perfect. He made several more markings as well to make sure I would have it in the right spot. I still wanted the initial marking so he wiped off the other marks with alcohol and told me to lay back.
He withdrew the needle from the package. Then he used new clamps and put them on my upper lip. I grabbed my friend Tiffany's hand for support. He told me to take a deep breath in, and then exhale. As I exhaled, I felt the needle pierce through my skin. It was quick but definitely hurt. I had tears in my eyes and as he slipped the bar through I could see a little bit of blood in the mirror. Then he finished cleaning me up and gave me a small hand mirror. It looked perfect. He read the list of instructions and told me which products to buy and to come back in 3 weeks so that he could put in the smaller bar. I got this done yesterday and its doing great. The swelling is minimal and there is no discomfort. I strongly recommend Dominick and this piercing studio. He made me feel at ease and the process went very smoothly. All in all, if you're considering the Monroe piercing definitely go for it!
Also, I recommend using the Dial antibacterial soap, and iodine free sea salt. Also for mouthwash, get crest pro health, alcohol free. I searched the web and talked to doctors and my piercer and apparently these are the best things out there. I also used the soap and salt when I had my nose pierced and that healed very nicely.

After several months of harassing my parents to take me to get my monroe piercing done, I finally got it done a couple of days ago. At first I wanted a lip piercing (bottom lip, left side.) But my father refused to let me do that. He said that I "would look like a heroin addict". And even though every time the answer was the same I still pestered him, constantly.
One day we were at a hockey game, and we were sitting in our seats during the period break. I turned to my dad and asked him for my lip piercing, but of course his response was the same as it had been a million times before: No. But he did tell me that I could get a little nose piercing or something small. I told him I didn't want a nose piercing, I wanted a lip piercing! He told me that I would have to wait until I was 18.
Then one day we were at a football game (there seems to be a pattern here.) I asked him if I could get a monroe piercing. He said he didn't know what that was, so I explained it to him. He still didn't quite comprehend what I was trying to explain, so when we got back to my uncle's house I showed him a picture of one on the laptop. He told me that I could get one done, it just had to be small. I agreed.
I was absolutely ecstatic.It took me a long time to finally get my parents to take me to get my monroe done, but it finally happened. On Saturday afternoon I asked them if they would take me, but my mom had a work Christmas party, but they would take me tomorrow. I couldn't wait.
Then Sunday came, and they drove me in to get my monroe done. But the Tattoo parlor where I could get it done didn't open until noon, so we went out for Chinese food first. We walked into the parlor, the man at the counter told us that the piercer had gone over to the Dollar Store for a minute and he would be right back, so we filled out the forms while we waited. A few minutes later the piercer walked in. To be totally honest, he kind of scared me at first. He had long hair, past his shoulders. He looked like a member of a heavy metal band. He told me and my mom to follow him into a little room that was kind of tucked away.
When we got into the room he told me to have a seat. I sat down on a black bed type thing. He put on black gloves, and told me to rinse my mouth with the Listerine for thirty seconds, and then to spit it into a little cup, so I did. Then he wiped over my mouth with a weird cloth thing, it smelt weird. "I feel like I"m at the dentist" I said allowed, him and my mom both gave a little chuckle. He then marked a spot above my lip and asked if that was good. I asked him to lower it, which he did.
Then I layed down on the bed. But right before he was about to do it I freaked out. (Like I said, terrified of needles.) He took the clamps out of my mouth, and told me to take a few deep breaths. I did, He told me to close my eyes. That way I couldn't see the needle and freak out, like I did the time before. He told me to count backwards from ten, and when I got to one to make a little noise. I did, 10-9-8-7-6 I felt the needle go through, It didn't hurt one bit!
"You're done" He said to me, reaching for the jewelery. I opened my eyes, he put the jewelery on, and wiped off the blood with a Q-tip. "Did it hurt?" If your thinking of getting a piercing I would highly recommend a monroe. They barely hurt, a lot less than you would think. And they are really quite nice, and fairly easy to take care of.

First my nose, Now My Lip....
So i had gotten my nose done near the end of gr.12...about a year and a half now. i had gone randomly with some friends on a spur of the moment idea, to all get pierced, one of muy favorite ways to get pierced! so i had been dying to get something new pierced, and i was thinking about getting my lip done for the longest time but wasn't eintierly sure about it. The one sunday afternoon, while i was out to lunch with some friends, when a few of em decided to go get something pierced, and i mean i can't even go into fredom without wanting something done.
So there i was sitting there debating when i just decicded to go for it, i mean seriously i can just take it out if i end up hating it! so i went for it, while my friends cheered me on, and man oh man do i love it. at first it sorta hurt, the day after my lip was HUGE, and i had to get use to talking and eating with a metal rod in my lip, so i had defintly bit my lip more than once. but now everything is fine and dandy and i fricken love it! and even better my parents didn't freak when they saw it, such a plus considering i didn't tell em ahead of time! and now once again i'm itching to get something else done to bring my piercing count up to 8!!!
How to Safely Stretch a Piercing
Stretching or Gauging Up
If you’re interested in stretching a piercing, there are safe ways to do it and then there are unsafe ways. Knowing what your options are and what the differences are between them will help you figure out which way is the best for your piercing.
What Is It?
Stretching, also known as gauging, is the process of increasing the size of a piercing hole (fistula). It is typically a gradual process that can take many months or even years to reach the desired gauge size.
Why Do People Do It?
The people who choose to stretch their piercings do so for different reasons. Many tribal members stretch piercings as symbols of cultural and social status. In western civilizations, it is done primarily for adornment, although there is a part of stretching that seems to appeal to a primal urge hidden deeply within all of us.
It is possible that seeking such ancient body alterations is the result of a person tapping into some dormant primitive gene, but that is merely speculation.
Stretching Options
There are several different methods that can be utilized to stretch a piercing. The following are the most common:
Tapering (What is this?)
Weights (What is this?)
Tapered Claws and Talons (What is this?)
Scalpelling (What is this?)
Taping (What is this?)
Dermal Punch (What is this?)
Preparing For the Stretch
One thing that has been suggested to help make soft tissue more pliable and easy to stretch is applying heat and massaging the area with olive oil to stimulate blood circulation and soften the skin prior to stretching. Less trauma to the tissue during the stretch will result in a shorter healing time.
Gauge Up Gradually
In most cases, the safest way to stretch a piercing is slowly and gradually. It’s extremely important that the fistula be completely healed before attempting any stretch. If you’re gauging up anywhere between 18 and 12, it’s usually safe to stretch two gauges at a time. (i.e. 16 to 14). However, once you reach a 12 gauge, the stretches become much larger with each gauge. To see the difference in size between different gauges, see Carly Wickell’s . At that point, you’ll want to stretch one gauge at a time. Any more than that could result in tearing and scarring.
It’s also very important that you make sure to wait for one stretching to heal completely before stretching again. Depending on the size of the stretch and your body’s ability to heal, it could take weeks or months to be ready to undergo the procedure again.
Although it is not recommended, you can speed up the process of increasing gauge size with scalpelling or with a dermal punch. Be sure that you research these options fully before deciding on either of them.
Will it Shrink Back?
In the event that you stretch your piercing and then decide that you don’t like it anymore, the odds are not in your favor that it will shrink back to normal size. When you stretch a piercing, you need to be sure that you are prepared for it to be permanent. However, there is always a chance that it could go back to normal size, but it depends on a few different factors:
Size of Stretch – The larger you go, the less likely it will go back to its original size. Generally, 2 gauge has been coined “the point of no return,” meaning that once you have stretched that far, it’s not going to go back.
Length of Stretch Time – If your piercing has been stretched for a couple of years or more, it’s pretty well set and probably isn’t going to shrink back.
How It Was Stretched – If the piercing was stretched too quickly, especially if there was an resulting scar tissue, it probably won’t revert very easily. If it was done with a scalpel or dermal punch, it definitely will not shrink.
Possible Complications
If safety precautions are not observed, there are some problems that can occur.
Blow-outs can occur if you stretch too early, before the fistula is completely healed. Bleeding and soreness are common, but can continue longer than necessary if you stretch too far or too fast. Infections can develop if the piercing is not cleaned regularly or properly, or if improper jewelry is being used. It’s important that you be very careful before proceeding with any stretching, and it’s always best to leave it to the professionals – don’t attempt to do it yourself.
Care and Healing
Healing a newly stretched piercing is very similar to healing a brand new piercing, but it requires some additional TLC. It’s very important to keep it clean and allow it the opportunity to “breathe.” Sea salt soaks are also important to keep infection from developing and to sooth the soreness.
Proper Jewelry
I learned from personal experience that, no matter how attractive plugs are and how much you may want to wear plugs, they are not advisable during the healing process. They tend to suffocate the piercing, especially the side that holds the o-ring. If you must wear a plug, be sure to remove that o-ring every time you clean the piercing. Otherwise, it’s really best that you stick to a CBR, circular barbell or flesh tunnel that requires no o-ring. Once your piercing is completely healed, you can switch to a plug if you so desire.
During the healing stages, it is not advisable or safe to wear silver, gold, organic, plastic, glass or bone jewelry. These materials are conducive to causing irritation and infection in unhealed piercings. Only surgical grade stainless steel, niobum or titanium should be used during the healing of any new or newly stretched piercing.
Worth the Wait
If you stretch carefully and slowly, it will all be worth it in the end. It’s difficult being patient through this process and if you’re the kind of person that needs instant gratification, then this may not be a good option for you.
Before deciding to stretch any of your piercings, make sure that you are 100% positive that this is what you want. In most cases, stretching is permanent, so it’s not a decision that should be made lightly. Tragus – Conch Piercing in Mallorca.
The trip had been in the planning for over 6 months, two and a half weeks of climbing in Mallorca; the last week of June and the first week and a half of July. Timed so we had finished our exams, and missed the main tourist inrush that would mark the school holidays back in the UK. I was looking forward to the trip over, as I'd never been on a plane before. I was looking forward to the experience, as I'd only been out of the UK once before, and being 21 I was sure I was missing out! Most of all, I was looking forward to the main reason we were going. 17 days of living in a hammock, with really bad food, not really enough water, and some of the best climbing to be had!
Arriving in Palma was fun, getting to the hostel where we were to stay the first night was less so, buses being about my least favoured form of transport at the best of times, not least when you don't understand a single word being said by any of the other occupants. After getting settled into the hostel we decided to have a trek across the city and have a look at the local climbing shop. Passing through a maze of small streets in a pedestrian only zone that marked the centre of the old town. Passing shops that looked like they hadn't changed since the Victorian times, nestled up against shops of shining metal and plastic, not that it gave any indication of what they were supplying.
My first encounter was to the right, a small shop on the corner packed from floor to ceiling with display cases of piercing jewellery, everything from sparkle to black was covered, along with most everything in-between. Being moved along by my fellow climbers, the thoughts of the Tragus – Conch piercings that I had been thinking about over the preceding weeks came back to the fore, along with a very loud and stern thought of "You CANNOT get pierced before spending 2 weeks in the middle of nowhere, that is not after-care!". Realising that, as usual, common sense really should prevail, I moved onwards, only to find another piercing and tattoo shop on the left only a hundred meters or so along from the one I'd just left. Large posters showed pictures of piercings and tattoos they had done (or had they?) along with various famous persons with their own weakened PC versions. As we moved through the streets, I noticed several more piercing and tattoo places. The thoughts of getting my new piercing done while I was there kept circling around in my head, but reason won out. Deciding that it would just be inviting infection I passed them all by on the way back without too much disappointment.
While travelling between the various climbing locations, by coach, at least not as unpleasant as the damn buses but far too warm anyhow, I noticed many more piercing, and more often, tattoo shops. The business they did with the tourists must be phenomenal, but with the number of drunken parties of young people, not surprising. On returning to Palma, the thoughts returned to the fore; "I'm out here, I want to get it done anyway, why not?!". The plan I settled with was simple; get to the hostel, get a shower (as the facilities half way up a mountain are not the best available) then get back into the centre and see what's available!
The route to the centre was easy; follow the road at the back of the hostel, across the green expanse of park and fountains, then down the small back streets and up the steps with the water running down either side. This was when someone else was giving the directions..... and had a map! Getting to the park was easy, and various landmarks meant I got to the maze of small streets without getting too lost, that was where luck ran out. The network of small streets took me in generally the right direction. Forward and right were the main thoughts, and then the steps should be in front of me. No such luck! After another half hour of walking, getting lost, walking back, seeing a set of stairs and bounding enthusiastically up them on the figuring that up was always a good plan and finally deciding better of my original thought I found a large, and very neat looking tattoo shop on the corner of two larger streets.
I went inside and was instantly glad of the air conditioning, the heat of Mallorca being one of my least enjoyable points of the entire trip. The staff had a laid back attitude, and a fair few body mods, content to let me browse at my own pace without trying to pounce on me. After looking around I talked to the woman at the desk, whereupon I had an abrupt realisation; I didn't speak Spanish beyond ordering burgers and beer, and her grasp on English, whilst putting my pathetic attempts to shame, was nowhere near enough to converse in. I managed to communicate to the woman what my interests were, and she seemed to understand, asking a price for what I wanted done I was given the scarily small amount of Ђ30, with exchange rate and the like taken into account around Ј20, not even enough to get a lobe done back in the UK. Having wondered through all the cabinets of barbell related items once already, I said I'd think about it and come back shortly. I wondered out of the shop, back into the oppressive heat of the outside world, fishing a lolly pop out of my pocket as I went, a short term addiction I'd picked up the week before. I'd had trouble with my body reacting badly to being pierced before, and I wasn't in the mood to be passing out in a piercers chair where none else spoke the same language as me.
I returned about 10 minutes later, full of apple flavoured lolly pop and definite interest in getting pierced. I ran it past the woman at the desk again, before being referred upstairs to a late 20's guy in flip-flops, shorts and a slightly lurid looking shirt. Hearing a run of Spanish go between them, along with some gesturing, he seemed to know what I was after, not that there was all that much I could do to confirm it. He checked over my ear to make sure there was nothing that would pose problems with the piercing, then passed me back to the woman downstairs to get paid, instructing me to come back up when that had gone through. Upon my return I was presented with an ice cube in some kitchen roll, and told to sit with it on my tragus for the next 10 minutes. While sitting there I got increasingly nervous about the entire event. While Ђ30 was a ridiculously good price to get this done for (in the UK it would have cost a minimum of Ј60, probably more) the lack of any English going past made me feel quite alone, much more than I would have done anywhere else.
After my ice cube had melted into a small blob covered in some very wet kitchen roll, I was ushered into a piercing room. More Spanish flowed between the guy and an older lady in gloves and apron. Getting more worried that my piercing was changing places the more people got told about it, I sat down on the bench. The lady proffered me a pen, something that gave me an amazing sense of relief, and held a mirror up so I could mark the entry points for the bar. Happy I'd got it lined up level with the rest of my ear, I passed the pen back and smiled happily, glad that things were going well once again. I was instructed to lie down to make it easier for the both of us, and watched as she got a fresh needle out of the container, unwrapping it deftly as she went.
Without much warning the needle was lined up on the entry point of the tragus and pushed through. It was quite a shock, I'd been pierced without numbing before, and I found it to be less painful that it was with numbing. Either way, the needle going through my cold ear was disturbingly painful, and I was not much looking forward to the second hole as she lined up on the second entry point.
The pain from the second one was very similar to the first, although not as bad as it could have been, even without an ice cube! The bar was threaded onto the needle sheath and drawn through my ear, the ball being tightened up quite firmly. I was left to lie in peace for a minute, then moved through to the waiting room again, on the way my other bit of badly acquired Spanish made it's self useful "Gracias". She smiled and returned the sentiment.
Back in the waiting room, I got through several cups of water, much to the guy's surprise. Then went back downstairs and found some small blackline cones, picking up a spare one because the price was rather good. I thanked the lady at the desk, and the guy who'd helped me, and made my way back out into the heat, knowing roughly the direction for home, or at least hostel.
A month on and the piercing is healing very well. Crusting up a little, but no more than is expected from an open bar piercing. Swimming in the mornings seems to be rather good for it, and less damaging than scratching at it when I'm absent minded.
Overall a good experience, even if it was a little worrying at the time. And the piercing looks excellent!
